45 DEGREE LAYOUT

FLOOR LAYOUTS

Floor layouts are how the individual boards get laid down on your floor, there are a whole slew of options here and how a floor is laid out is a huge piece of the hardwood floor puzzle for some. There are four main types of layouts, with one them, parquet, not having a set definition but more a style to it.

STRAIGHT LAYOUT

Straight lay is very self explanatory, your floors get laid out in straight lines across your room. They will typically conform to and are parallel with the longest wall of the room. This gives the best illusion and allows for the best use of long boards in your floors, giving them an overall better look and feel. This is what's great about site finished hardwood flooring, many types of prefinished flooring will come bundled in one length, hiding the randomness that makes site finished floors unique.

45 DEGREE LAYOUT

This is also what it sounds like. Boards get laid across the room at a 45 degree angle, giving your floors a little bit more style.

HERRINGBONE LAYOUT

Herringbone is a custom layout, but with a definitive technique to it. As per wikipedia, "Opus spicatum(herringbone), literally "spiked work," is a type of masonry construction used in Roman and medieval times. It consists of bricks, tiles or cut stone laid in a herringbone pattern."

PARQUET LAYOUT

Parquet layouts don't have a specific look to them, they have many, many different styles. One of the most popular parquet styles is Herringbone, listed above. Another popular parquet layout is depicted to the left, 3 boards put together and laid out in squares with their ends perpendicular to one another.
